Box Office Breakdown: Alice in Wonderland in the Green Zone

The combined forces of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass could not earn Green Zone the green.
Although the film nearly matched The Hurt Locker‘s total domestic gross ($15.7 million) in just one weekend, Green became the latest war-based film to open to underwhelming numbers. The movie, which debuted to $14.3 million and cost approximately $100 million to produce, also came nowhere near Damon and Greengrass’ last project together. (The Bourne Ultimatum opened to $69.3 million in 2007.)
Meanwhile, Alice in Wonderland continued along its fantastic journey. The movie, which has now taken in over $209 million domestically, has officially become one of Disney’s Top 20 all-time entries.

Box Office Breakdown: Wonderful Start for Alice in Wonderland
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Horror, Music, Romance, Science Fiction, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists,
Something tells me we’ll be seeing more collaborations between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton soon.
Alice in Wonderland, the latest project from the famous movie-making team, unfolded to a whopping $116 million over the Oscar weekend. Disney’s 3-D adaptation had the best open ever for a non-sequel and the largest debut for any winter release outside of the holiday season. (And we thought Passion of the Christ‘s $83.8 million looked good six years ago.)
Tim Burton’s entry gave the director his best first weekend to date (compared to the $68.5 million Planet of the Apes grossed in 2001). The movie did, though, come in second to Johnny Depp’s personal high. (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men’s Chest raked in $135.6 million in 2006.)
Alice also topped all 3-D openers…including Avatar. (Granted, James Cameron did have a blizzard to contend with at the time.)

Johnny Depp Mad for Hatter Role
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Disney, Adaptation, Classics, Family, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
Johnny Depp is honored to play the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.
The 46-year-old actor admits his eccentric character in Tim Burton‘s film, based on the classic children’s novel, was a “dream” role.
“To play the Mad Hatter and breathe life into Tim’s vision is a dream come true. He’s a fascinating character. He’s mad. He’s unpredictable.”
Depp also suggests the Mad Hatter will have a great affection for the movie’s protagonist, Alice, played by actress Mia Wasikowska: “They complete one another like a brother and sister do. He’s very protective of her, and she’s very protective of him.”
Earlier this month Anne Hathaway, who plays the White Queen in the movie, admitted the original script had her playing the lead role of Alice - but she turned it down as she felt it was too close to a previous role.
“The studio had the Alice script a long time ago and I was approached back then for the part of Alice. I considered it, but felt, what with The Princess Diaries, that I had been there, done that sort of pretty-girl-in-a-fairy-dress role. I told the studio, however, that I would, however, be interested in playing the White Queen.”
Alice in Wonderland follows a storyline different to the original story, written by Lewis Caroll, and will be released in early March.
Get Two New Peeks at Alice in Wonderland

Could 2010 just get here already?
Although there are a long list of award nominees I still have yet to see, I’m already looking forward to the post-Oscar period. I mean, how can you watch this new Alice in Wonderland trailer and not get excited? I doubt we’d ever see anything this fun in the Best Film category - even with its expanded field. Thankfully, we have less than three months to go before the March 5 premiere.
A slightly different UK trailer can be found after the jump.

The Colorful Characters from Burton’s Alice in Wonderland
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Adaptation, Adventure, Family, Technology, Upcoming Releases,
No matter how you feel about Tim Burton‘s uneven work (Mars Attacks? Planet of the Apes?), there’s one thing that cannot be denied: His films are a visual treat.
Next year, the director will introduce Alice in Wonderland, an adaptation of the Lewis Carroll story. The movie, which uses live action and performance-capture technology, will be offered in 3-D.

Beauty and the Beast to Go 3-D
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Animation, Classics, Family, Musicals, Technology,
As hard as it is to believe, it’s already been 17 years since Beauty and the Beast first premiered. And though it’s still nice to still along with Gaston and Lumiere via the DVD, we will soon have a new way to experience the movie all over again.
Come 2010, Disney will rerelease the Oscar-nominated film - it was the first full-length animated movie to be up for Best Picture - as a new 3-D theatrical feature. This update is just one of several reissues the studio has in store. Plans for a revamped Toy Story and Toy Story 2 have already been in the works.
In addition to this weekend’s release of Bolt, upcoming 3-D titles for Disney include the Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie, Toy Story 3, Up, G-Force, Alice in Wonderland and Rapunzel.

Getting Into Character: Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Adaptation, Family, Casting, Rumors,
Given all the characters we’ve seen Johnny Depp take on, is the Mad Hatter really a stretch?
Although the circumstances behind this image have not yet been confirmed, it’s believed this picture is of the 45-year-old on the Alice in Wonderland set. Since the Tim Burton film will be incorporating live action and performance-capture technology a la Beowulf, it’s not clear how this costume may fit into the Lewis Carroll update.
The 2010 release also features Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Helena Bonham Carter (the Red Queen), Anne Hathaway (the White Queen), Michael Sheen (the Cheshire Cat) and Crispin Glover (the Knave of Hearts).
